In 1963, Yann Martel was born in the Spanish city of Salamanca. He is a Canadian novelist best known for the book Life of Pi, which won the Man Booker Prize in 2007. He has received a variety of literary honours, including the Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction in 2001 and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in 2001-2003, among others. In addition, he is the first Canadian to be appointed to the Washington Arts Commission’s board of directors. Despite the fact that French is his native language, Yann Martel writes in English: “English is the language in which I am able to convey the complexity of life to the greatest extent. However, I have to admit that French is the language that I am most passionate about. And it is for this same reason that English provides me with a suitable amount of distance to write.”
