Keir Mather born in 1997 or 1998, is a British Labour Party politician serving as Member of Parliament for Selby and Ainsty since the 2023 by-election. When elected at the age of 25, Keir Mather became the youngest serving MP.

Keir Mather was born in Hull and raised in Bluff, East Riding, Yorkshire. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oxford, studying history and politics before earning a master’s degree in public policy (MPP). During his time at Oxford, he was elected to the board of the Oxford Trade Union and was also co-president of the Oxford University Labor Club.

Keir Mather worked for 18 months as a Public Relations Advisor to the Confederation of British Industry before moving to Parliament, where he was Wes Streeting’s Parliamentary Fellow from 2019 to 2020.

Keir Mather won the seat from Selby and Ainstey in the July 20, 2023 by-election following the resignation of Conservative MP Nigel Adams, who has held the seat since 2010. At 25 when he was elected, and became the youngest Member of Parliament to succeed Nadia Whitome. If elected, he said, “My first priority will be to establish financial assistance centers in my constituencies where people can get expert help paying their mortgages and paying their utility bills.”

Keir Mather lives in London and is openly gay. He supports rugby league club Hull Kingston Rovers. Keir Mather graduated from Oxford just four years ago and got his first job as a party investigator for Wes Street, now the shadow health secretary.

But the 25-year-old, who became Tony Blair’s first MP after taking office, was derided last night by Conservative Minister Johnny Mercer as “the return of the Inbetweeners”. Mr. Mercer said the history and political science graduate “had spent more time at Oxford than at work” and warned that he should not expect a warm welcome from Conservative MPs on arrival in Westminster.

According to his mother, Keir Mather was a member of the Youth Congress as a child and founded a youth labor organization in Hull. He was named after James Kier Hardy, one of the founders of the Labor Party. After school, the young Keir Mather studied history and politics at Oxford University, graduating with a first-class degree, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Keir Mather previously served as a parliamentary researcher under Deputy Health Secretary Wes Street and most recently as senior public affairs adviser to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). He also became a political leadership researcher at the Bravatnik School of Government, according to the University of Oxford.
