David McCullough, an 89-year-old historian who won a Pulitzer Prize, passed away.

He became one of the most well-liked and significant historians of his era thanks to his publications, which featured portraits of the Brooklyn Bridge, John Adams, and Harry Truman, as well as the Brooklyn Bridge.

Aside from his books, the couple’s long-lasting marriage served as an inspiration to the public through their love story and relationship.

At his Martha’s Vineyard home, McCullough would proudly display a snapshot of their first encounter—at a spring dance—in which the two were ogling each other.

David McCullough And Wife Rosalee Mccullough Love Story Began In Their Teen Years

David met his wife, Rosalee, while she was visiting a friend in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1951. In their teen years, when she was 18 years old, the duo met at a dance at the Rolling Rock Club.

The couple was hitched three years after the encounter, and they went on to have five kids together.

Being the political family’s daughter, Rosalee was used to the public spotlight. She frequently offered support to her husband from their home on Music Street in West Tisbury, Massachusetts, to assist his literary career.

Per “60 Minutes,” they were newlyweds who lived under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge, which served as the inspiration for his second book and first bestseller, “The Great Bridge.”

She continued to draw on her expertise when David’s writing career took off, and he wrote two presidential biographies that won him two Pulitzer Prizes: John Adams (2001) and Truman (1992).

Rosalee died at her West Tisbury home in the presence of her children. And still, it is unknown what caused her death.

Rosalee was praised by her daughter Dorie McCullough as “the star we have all steered by,” claiming that her mother molded her into what she is today.

Dorie added, “She always had a sense of how to improve things for people.” She could discern what would be beneficial and discreetly carry it out to improve the situation.”

Her obituary stated that her “kindness, optimism, enthusiasm, humor, grace, her powerful and balanced mind, and love of talk” made her so adored by everyone she knew.

Similarly, it also remarked that she “was always diligent, helpful to her extended family, practical, enjoyed a good party, and loved dancing.”

“She always had insightful advice to share when prompted. She served as the moral compass for the group.”

Historian’s Family Extended With Birth Of His Five Children

The McCullough family moved from the Back Bay of Boston to Hingham, Massachusetts, in 2016, and with three of his five children, they lived there till 2017.

His son David Jr., an English teacher at the Boston suburbs’ Wellesley High School, soared to internet fame in 2012 after he delivered a commencement speech in which he repeatedly informed graduating students that they were “not special.”

Further, his speech quickly gained millions of views on YouTube. Bill, a second son, is wed to Bob Graham’s daughter, a former governor of Florida.

In a similar vein, his daughter Dorie McCullough is the author of Along Comes a Stranger and Posterity: Letters of Great Americans to Their Children. She resides in Rockport, Maine.
