Charlie Munger, the longtime vice chairman and second-in-command to Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway died on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

According to a press release from Berkshire Hathaway, Munger was 99 and would have turned 100 on January 1. He died peacefully, Berkshire said. No cause of death has been given as of this writing.

His longtime friend and business partner, Warren Buffett said; “Berkshire Hathaway could not have been built to its present status without Charlie’s inspiration, wisdom, and participation”

Tim Cook tweeted; “A titan of business and keen observer of the world around him, Charlie Munger helped build an American institution, and through his wisdom and insights, inspired a generation of leaders. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Charlie”

Alex Zhavoronkov wrote; “The wise giant has fallen today. A moment of silence, RIP Charlie Munger. Today, we cannot convert money into more healthy productive life years. I will spend the rest of my life working to change that. Aging, the universal inflation of life. It is the most common denominator and everyone is on the clock”

Born on January 1, 1924, and an Omaha native, Munger left the University of Michigan to become an Army meteorologist during World War II.

He later earned a degree from Harvard Law School and met Buffett at a dinner party in 1959. He joined Berkshire Hathaway in the 1970s.

Munger served as chairman of Wesco Financial Corporation from 1984 through 2011. He was also chairman of the Daily Journal Corporation (Los Angeles) and a director of Costco Wholesale Corporation.

At the time of his death, Munger served on Berkshire’s board and newspaper publisher Daily Journal Corp. and retailer Costco.

Like Buffett, he was known as a pragmatic investor and an active philanthropist who lived relatively frugally and gave millions to universities.
