She attended Bellaire High School, where she became interested in acting and stand-up comedy. She claimed that her high school drama teacher had been her greatest inspiration.
When she was ten, she read Gray’s Anatomy because she had a similar fascination with the medical industry. Her father had advised her not to pursue an acting career, so she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin with a nursing major.
While she was a student, Tolsky worked as a nurse’s assistant on the weekends and after-hours at the Texas Medical Center.
At Texas Children’s Hospital and Houston Methodist Hospital, she provided pediatric care until administrators decided she could work anywhere in the medical center.
She then began working as an obstetrics and gynecology medical assistant. She initially intended to major in medicine and become a doctor, but she left pre-med in the middle of her second year.
When Tolsky first arrived in Hollywood, Foy didn’t offer her a contract with Screen Gems; instead, she introduced her to people in casting and helped her find an agent.
From 1980 to 1983, Tolsky played a variety of one-time characters in four episodes of the CBS sitcom Alice.
She made appearances in the Steven Hilliard Stern and Robert Scheerer films How to Beat the High Cost of Living (1980) and The Devil and Max Devlin (1981), respectively. She also made two guest appearances on the ABC sitcom Barney Miller in the years 1981 and 1982, for which the scripts had not yet been completed.
Even though they had to wait for the scripts to be finished, she praised the cast and crew as being wonderful and described the experience as being joyous. In 1982, she also appeared as a guest star on an episode of the crime drama Matt Houston.
