Jean Knight died at 80 on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Family representative, Mona Giamanco confirmed in a statement that she died of natural causes at her home in Tampa, Florida.

Knight’s family also shared in a statement; “Jean Knight’s legacy is not just a musical one; it is a testament to the enduring love between an artist, her hometown, and the fans who adored her”

Born in New Orleans, Jean Knight began her professional career in the mid-1960s. She became a household name following the release of her 1971 hit single, “Mr. Big Stuff”.

The song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and No. 2 on the Billboard 200 pop chart. The success of the song earned Knight a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1972.

The Grammy-nominated singer went on to record several more projects including; ones that featured songs “(Don’t Mess With) My Toot Toot” and “Bill” and later formed her own label, Comstar.

In 2007, Jean Knight was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. She also served on the Louisiana Music Commission
