Written by Emily Ross — 0 Views

Who are Alexandre Trudeau’s Parents? – Alexandre Trudeau, born on December 25, 1973, is a Canadian filmmaker, journalist, and author of Barbarian Lost.

He is the younger brother of Canada’s current prime minister, Justin Trudeau, and the second son of former prime minister, Pierre Trudeau, and Margaret Trudeau.

Like his father and brothers, he studied at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf, graduating from McGill University with a B.A. in philosophy and a Masters in architecture.

While at McGill, he joined the Canadian Forces as a Reserve Entry Scheme Officer, training at CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick. He produced his first documentary, Liberia, the Secret War, in West Africa after graduation.

Following his father’s death in 2000, both of Pierre Trudeau’s surviving sons returned to the public eye. Alexandre Trudeau continued to live in his father’s Art Deco home (Cormier House) in Montreal and produced documentaries for Canadian television.

In 2003, he covered the 2003 invasion of Iraq, producing a documentary film for the CTV program W5, Embedded In Baghdad. His 2004 film, The Fence, addressed the families on either side of the Israeli-built security barrier around the West Bank.

Alexandre Trudeau focused attention on the implications for civil liberties in the Canadian government’s use of security certificates to detain indefinitely, without trial, suspected terrorists based on secret evidence in June 2005.

He offered to be a surety for Hassan Almrei, a Syrian refugee held in a Canadian jail for four years without any charges being laid. Trudeau’s efforts were chronicled in his documentary Secure Freedom, and Almrei was ordered released under house arrest by a Federal Court judge on January 2, 2009.

In 2016, Alexandre Trudeau published his first book, Barbarian Lost, a travel memoir with an undercurrent of philosophical and historical reflection about China. He is the President and Chief Producer at Same Adventure Productions, a founding member of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation for excellence in social sciences and humanities research and innovation.

Who are Alexandre Trudeau’s Parents?

Alexandre is the second son of Pierre and Margaret Trudeau, and he was born during the family’s attendance at the Christmas midnight mass at Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church.

Margaret Trudeau suffered from severe postpartum depression after his birth and was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Due to his father’s love for Russian literature and culture, he was nicknamed “Sacha,” which is the French spelling of the Russian diminutive for Alexander.

The name is also associated with the family friend Alexander Yakovlev, a former ambassador of the USSR to Canada.
