Alex Karaban is the son of Alexei Karaban (father) and Olga Karaban (mother). His father, originally from Belarus is a software engineer while his mother, originally from Ukraine is a physical therapist.

As of this writing (Monday, December 4, 2023), Karaban plays for the UConn Huskies of the Big East Conference.

He attended Algonquin Regional High School and then transferred to the New Hampton School in New Hampton, New Hampshire after his freshman year.

As a junior, he was named the New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 25.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.9 blocks per game.

After the end of the school year, Karaban transferred a second time to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida

He was rated a four-star recruit and committed to play college basketball at UConn over offers from Stanford, Iowa, and Creighton

After graduating from IMG Academy, he enrolled at UConn in January 2022. He practiced with the team for the rest of the 2021-2022 season.

Karaban was a unanimous selection to the Big East Conference’s All-Freshman team at the end of his redshirt freshman season.

He started the 2023 national championship game and scored five points with five rebounds and three blocked shots as the Huskies won 76-59

Karaban entered his sophomore year on the watchlist for the Karl Malone Award. He’s projected to be a second-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
