On December 3, 2020, Maxey agreed to a rookie scale contract with the team. Maxey scored eight and eleven points in limited minutes during two preseason games, leading head coach Doc Rivers to declare him “one of our main bench guys” for the 2020–21 campaign.

On December 23, the opening game of the season, he made his NBA debut with the 76ers against the Washington Wizards. In eleven minutes, he scored six points on a 3-for-6 shooting percentage, had two assists, and pulled down two rebounds.

Maxey continued his growth at the NBA Summer League during the 2021 summer after the 76ers were eliminated from the playoffs. Maxey and Shake Milton platooned the starting point guard position when Ben Simmons declined to play for the 76ers at the beginning of the 2021–2022 season.

Through the first 51 games of the season, Maxey averaged 16.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 35.6 minutes. As a part of Team Worthy, he was selected for the 2022 NBA Rising Stars Challenge.

Maxey immediately benefited from the 76ers’ deal with the Brooklyn Nets to acquire James Harden during the NBA trade deadline.

Maxey was able to resume his natural shooting guard position with the addition of point guard Harden, which gave him more shooting opportunities. In his first two games back after Harden’s arrival, Maxey averaged 24.5 points.

After concluding his second season with 17.5 points per game and shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 42.7 percent from three-point range, he scored 25 points in the 76ers’ regular-season finale against the Detroit Pistons.

In the first round of the NBA playoffs in 2022, the Toronto Raptors and the 76ers squared off. In the first game of the series, Maxey had a breakthrough performance, leading the 131-111 Philadelphia triumph with a postseason career-high 38 points.

By achieving this, he made history as the youngest player from Philadelphia to score thirty or more points in a postseason match. Maxey scored 21.3 points a night on average while shooting 51.1 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from three-point range to help the 76ers overcome the Raptors in six games.

In the Eastern Conference playoffs, Philadelphia faced the Miami Heat. The 76ers lost 119–103 in Game 2, even though Maxey scored 34 points. In the end, the series ended in a series loss.

After the series, Maxey was the 76ers’ top scorer, averaging 20.2 points per game on 45.6 percent shooting and 34.4 percent from three-point range.

In a 112–90 victory over the Toronto Raptors on October 28, 2022, Maxey scored a career-high 44 points on 15–of–20 shooting from the field, including nine of his 12 attempts from three-point range.

In addition, he became one of only two Sixers players, along with Hal Greer and Allen Iverson, to score forty points or more in a game before turning 23. With nine three-pointers made in a game, he also tied Dana Barros and Danny Green for the most in Sixers history.

Maxey scored an average of 20.3 points per game and shot 43.4% from three-point range as he concluded his third season with the 76ers.

On November 12, 2023, Maxey defeated the Indiana Pacers 137–126, recording a career-high 50 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three blocks.

With 50+ points, five+ rebounds, and five+ assists, he became the sixth Sixer in history, joining Allen Iverson, Joel Embiid, Wilt Chamberlain, Hal Greer, and Dana Barros. As the only Sixers with 50+ points at 23 or younger, he also joined Iverson in this regard.
