Tracy began her career in 1988 at WTRF-TV in Wheeling, West Virginia as a weathercaster. She later went to WFMJ-TV in Youngstown, Ohio where she was the chief weather anchor until 1991. She then joined the WRIC-TV news team in Richmond, Virginia where she anchored the morning and noon weathercasts. In 1993 Butler joined ABC and worked as a fill-in anchor in the morning show Good Morning America until 2002.
