John Matshikiz was a multifaceted talent from South Africa, was renowned as an actor, theatre director, poet, and journalist. In December 2007, his life took a tragic turn when he fell victim to a violent hijacking incident. This harrowing experience heightened his criticism of the government’s inability to address the soaring crime rates in the country. Unfortunately, John’s health began to deteriorate due to the lingering effects of the hijacking and an encounter with malaria during one of his trips across Africa.

Tragedy struck on the 15th of September, 2008, when John suffered a heart attack while at the Picobella restaurant in Melville, Johannesburg. Regrettably, he passed away shortly thereafter, leaving behind a legacy of artistic brilliance and a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by many in South Africa.

Beyond journalism, Todd Matshikiza’s passion for music shone brightly. He gained recognition for composing the score of the groundbreaking musical “King Kong.” This all-black cast production, set against the backdrop of heavyweight boxer Ezekiel Dlamini’s life, captivated audiences in South Africa and transcended racial boundaries. “King Kong” enjoyed international success, with performances in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, and even London’s West End in 1961. The musical played a pivotal role in launching the international career of the renowned Miriam Makeba.

His love for classical music inspired him to create “Makhaliphile” in 1953, a choral piece dedicated to Trevor Huddleston’s impactful work in Johannesburg’s underprivileged communities. In 1958, Todd Matshikiza composed the music and contributed lyrics to “King Kong,” marking a significant milestone in his musical career. This jazz musical portrayed the tumultuous life of “King Kong” Dlamini, gaining widespread acclaim and drawing multi-racial audiences.

Frustrated by the apartheid system, Matshikiza, along with his family, relocated to London in 1960, where he continued to contribute to the world of music and journalism.
