Sean Plunket parents-New Zealand broadcast journalist, Oliver Sean Plunket was born on September 9th, 1964 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Plunket happens to be the son of the renowned journalist, Patrick Plunket. He has a brother.

From 1980 to 1982, he attended Plimmerton Primary School and Nelson College, where he played rugby for the 1st XV in 1981 and 1982. The Wellington Polytechnic School of Journalism was his next stop for academic pursuits.

Sean Plunket’s Career

Early positions held by Plunket in journalism and broadcasting included a brief period as a copywriter at Radio Windy, five years at Independent Radio News, a brief period as a reporter for Radio New Zealand, three years as a political reporter on TV3, working as a presenter-reporter on TVNZ’s Fair Go and Under Investigation programs, and later roles at TV3 on 20/20 and as a senior political reporter.

He served as one of the two hosts of Radio New Zealand National’s Morning Report from 6 to 9 a.m. on weekdays from 1997 to 2010.

In April 2013, Plunket succeeded Michael Laws as presenter of the 9 a.m. to noon daily slot on Radio Live, afterwards known as MagicTalk. He did so until December 2015, when Mark Sainsbury took over.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority named Plunket to the media watchdog for a three-year term in late September 2017, beginning on October 1.

John Banks, the previous temporary presenter of MagicTalk talkback radio, was fired shortly after Plunket departed the station in February 2021.

In September 2021, Plunket made intentions to launch The Platform, a talkback website he said would support free speech, democracy, and discussion.

On February 16 and 17, 2023, the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) heard testimony in a case involving Plunket and Ani O’Brien, a former Platform digital engagement editor and press secretary for National Party leader Judith Collins.

Plunket posted many screenshots of a protective order against investigative journalist and filmmaker David Farrier on Twitter before the end of October 2022.

These Tweets spread before the documentary Mister Organ, directed by Farrier and examining the contentious car-clamping methods of former Auckland businessman Michael Organ, was set to be released on November 10.

On November 5th, Farrier attested to the legitimacy of the restraining order. On November 8, Farrier declared he would sue Plunket for posting the protection order on Twitter and making the announcement via Twitter.

On 22 December 2022, all charges against Farrier were dismissed by the New Zealand family court, which noted “significant embellishment in the initial affidavit” and “[t]here was not full and frank disclosure on this occasion.”
