Robert Jenrick’s academic journey began in Wolverhampton, where he attended Wolverhampton Grammar School. He later pursued a degree in history at St John’s College, Cambridge, and graduated in 2003. Following his undergraduate studies, Jenrick furthered his education at the University of Pennsylvania as a Thouron Fellow in Political Science. He then shifted his focus to law, obtaining a graduate diploma in law from The College of Law and completing the legal practice course at BPP Law School in 2006.
After qualifying as a solicitor in 2008, Robert Jenrick gained professional experience in corporate law, working with renowned firms such as Skadden Arps and Sullivan & Cromwell in London and Moscow. Notably, he held a director position at Christie’s, the prestigious auction house, before his entry into politics.
Jenrick’s political career took off when he contested the Newcastle-under-Lyme constituency for the Conservative Party in the 2010 general election. Although he narrowly lost to the Labour Party candidate, Paul Farrelly, Jenrick’s dedication and commitment to public service remained steadfast. In subsequent years, he served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to esteemed figures such as Employment Minister Esther McVey, Justice Secretaries Michael Gove and Liz Truss, and Home Secretary Amber Rudd. He also held the position of Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury under Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond.
Jenrick was appointed as the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government and during his tenure in this role, which lasted until September 2021, he made significant contributions to the housing and local government sectors. In 2022, Jenrick rejoined the government as the Minister of State for Health under the leadership of Liz Truss.
Beyond his political pursuits, Jenrick has shown a deep appreciation for history and a commitment to social causes. He has been an active member of the Parliamentary Conservative Friends of Israel group and has spoken passionately about his visit to Auschwitz concentration camp, highlighting the personal connection as his wife’s parents are Holocaust survivors. Jenrick’s involvement with the Jewish community holds great importance in his life.
While maintaining a strong focus on his political responsibilities, Jenrick also manages his personal affairs. He owns multiple properties, including two homes in London, one of which is situated near the Houses of Parliament. Additionally, he owns Eye Manor, a historic Grade I listed building in Herefordshire. As a dedicated representative of the Newark constituency, Jenrick rents a property in the area, funded through the MPs’ second homes allowance.
In April 2023, Jenrick faced legal consequences for a speeding offense. He was disqualified from driving for six months and fined £1,639 after exceeding the speed limit on the M1 motorway in August 2022.
