Rab Noakes was a singer-songwriter from Scotland. Noakes was raised in Cupar after being born in St Andrews, Fife.

Lindisfarne covered Noakes’ songs “Turn a Deaf Ear” on their first album, Nicely Out of Tune, and “Together Forever” on their second, Fog on the Tyne. “Turn a Deaf Ear” was also recorded by Barbara Dickson for her album Do Right Woman, on which Noakes also performed.

Noakes also sang background vocals and played guitar on Gerry Rafferty’s first solo album, Can I Have My Money Back, most notably on “Mary Skeffington,” a song about Rafferty’s mother.

Following these sessions, he joined Stealers Wheel, though he left before they recorded their first album. In 1970, Noakes released his first solo album, Do You See The Lights, with ex-partner Robin McKidd on electric guitar and Scottish jazz bassist Ronnie Rae. The songs “Too Old To Die,” “Together Forever,” and “Somebody Counts On Me” were included on this album.

The British music magazine NME reported in May 1972 that Noakes would perform at the Great Western Express Lincoln Festival on May 26, 1972. Budgie, Skin Alley, Tea & Sympathy, John Martyn, Warhorse, and Gnidrolog were among the other acts performing in the ‘Giants of Tomorrow’ marquee.

Terry Melcher produced the album Restless (1978) at Starling Sounds, which was based at Tittenhurst Park in Ascot, the former home of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, which was then owned by Ringo Starr.

Standing Up was released in 1994, after the albums Rab Noakes (1980) and Under the Rain (1984).
