The cause of his death is believed to be complications from his underlying blood cancer, for which he was being treated. Pablo Milanes 2014 received a kidney transplant, where he received an organ donated by his wife, and today he has died as a result of blood cancer according to reports sighted online.

Born Pablo Milanes Arias, he’s a 79-year-old Cuban musician who was born on 24 February 1943. He was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was one of the founders of Nueva Trova in Cuba, along with Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicolas. With roots in the Trova, Son, and other traditional styles of the early 20th century, his music is distinct from that of Silvio Rodriguez.

Pablo Milanes moved with his family from Bayamo to Havana in 1950. He studied at the Havana Municipal Conservatory, the most prestigious music school in the country at the time. His first public appearance was in 1956. At the age of 15, he was active in Havana in a “bohemian” musical circle associated with so-called “Filin” musicians.

Pablo Milanes supported the Cuban Revolution but was sent to the UMAP agricultural labor camp in Camaguey in 1965. He was imprisoned, first at the 18th-century fort in Havana, La Cabaña, where he was placed in a prisoner-of-war camp for two months and then for some time. He was released when the detention center was closed under international pressure.

In 1969 Pablo Milanes became part of the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora, a pioneering group of young musicians, many of whom began as a movement on February 18 with a concert by Pablo, Silvio Rodriguez, and Noel Nicolas Nueva. Until the late 1980s, the Nueva Trova was the informal musical style of the Cuban Revolution.

In the context of Nueva Trova, Pablo Milanes is widely considered to be one of the closest figures to Cuban music’s traditional roots, while at the same time voicing diverse music from other contemporary traditions such as Brazilian music. His compositions range from terrible political hymns to inspired love songs.

Suylén Milanes was the third child of Pablo Milanés’ nine children. She was the sister of the better-known Lynn, Liam, and Haydée. She was also a sister of Antonio and the two twins of Pablo with his current wife, Galician historian Nancy Perez.

Suylén was a twin to Liam and, along with Lynn, were Pablo Milanes’ three daughters from his relationship with Yolanda Benett, the woman who inspired his popular song.
