Respecting the wishes of her father, she attended the University of Sarajevo where she successfully completed degrees in Law, Philology, and the English language. It was only at age 17 that she started singing in 1967.

Andelija was the daughter of Serbian parents Dusan (the father) and Andelija (the mother). She spent her childhood in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Jelena was born to her marriage to Milan Bilbija.

In 1969, she released her first EP, Sve Sto Moje Srce Zna/ Ako Me Trebas.
