Cacsmy Brutus, also known as Mama Cax, was a prominent American-Haitian model and disability rights activist. Born on November 20, 1989, in Brooklyn, New York City, Cax was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and lung cancer at the age of 14. Despite doctors giving her only three weeks to live, she managed to beat the odds and underwent a hip replacement surgery, which ultimately led to the amputation of her right leg. Cax struggled with her confidence for several years following the amputation, but eventually, she learned to embrace her prosthetic and became a powerful voice in the fashion industry.

Cax was highly educated, earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in International Relations. She also took up wheelchair basketball at the age of 18. In 2016, she was invited to the White House to participate in a fashion show hosted by Barack and Michelle Obama. The following year, she signed with the JAG Models agency in New York and made her first commercial appearance. She went on to model for well-known brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Sephora, and Olay.

Cax was especially celebrated for her participation in New York Fashion Week in 2018, where she walked the runway in a swimsuit designed by Becca McCharen, who aims to challenge conventional beauty standards. That same year, she graced the cover of Teen Vogue, alongside Jillian Mercado and Chelsea Werner. In 2019, Cax was the face of Olay’s sunscreen marketing campaign and announced her intention to participate in the New York Marathon in a wheelchair.

Unfortunately, Cax passed away on December 16, 2019 while she was in England, due to severe abdominal pains and blood clots in the lung. She was remembered as a pioneering figure in the fashion industry and a strong advocate for disability rights. To celebrate her life and achievements, Google honored her with a Doodle on February 8, 2023, which marked her first appearance at New York Fashion Week in 2019. The Doodle was created by the artist Lyne Lucien.
