She was born on December 7, 1996, in Brighton, United Kingdom, and developed a passion for acting at a younger age. Abela attended Roedean School and took drama classes with the Theatre Workshop.

Initially, she wanted to study History and Law at UCL in order to become a human rights lawyer, but changed her mind and decided to pursue acting. Marisa graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 2019.

Abela made her television debut in 2020 with main roles in the Sky One action series COBRA as Ellie Sutherland and the BBC Two and HBO drama Industry as Yasmin Kara-Hanani. She also appeared in the films She Is Love and Rogue Agent.

In July 2022, Abela joined the cast of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. In the same month, it was announced Abela was in early talks to star as Amy Winehouse in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Back to Black, a biopic about the singer.

In January 2023, Abela made headlines when she was revealed that, she will play Amy Winehouse in the Back to Black biopic. The project will be directed by Fifty Shades of Grey creator, Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Angelo Abela is of Maltese-Libyan and English descent, and Caroline Gruber is of Polish Jewish and Russian Jewish ancestry.

Her father is known for directing and producing several movies including; Rein, Zero Chill, and The Mysti Show, among others. Her mother is known for her roles in Disobedience, Heil Honey I’m Home!, and Up Yer Festival, just to mention a few.
