He was born in Dongjak District, Seoul, South Korea. When RM was younger, his mother and the American sitcom Friends served as his primary source of English instruction.

South China Morning Post reporter Crystal Tai stated that RM has “received much praise for his natural flow and lyrics.

He was elevated from associate to full membership in the Korea Music Copyright Association in January 2020. RM was recognized as the 12th most favored idol of the year for 2018 in a Gallup Korea survey.

He was ranked eleventh in 2019. Along with the other BTS members, RM received the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea in 2018 for his services to promoting Korean culture.

He and the BTS members were chosen by President Moon Jae-in to serve as Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture in July 2021 in order to “expand South Korea’s diplomatic efforts and global standing” in the international arena and “lead the global agenda for future generations, such as sustainable growth.”

RM was chosen to serve as the Ministry of National Defense Agency Remains Excavation and Investigation Team’s Public Relations Ambassador on June 1, 2023. The team’s objective is to locate and identify the remains of Korean War warriors.
