With his impressive performances, he was offered a promotion from the U18s to the senior team coached by Yahiro Kazama but he chose instead the University of Tsukuba. In July 2018, he agreed on a professional contract with Kawasaki Frontale senior team starting in 2020.

He spent three seasons at Kawasaki Frontale with whom he won one J1 League, Emperor’s Cup, and Japanese Super Cup. On 10 August 2021, he joined Premier League side Brighton & Hobe Albion on a four-year deal, joining Union SG on loan for the first year.

On the international level, Mitoma has represented Japan at various age levels. He has represented Japan at U21, U23, and the senior level.

After being capped at the youth level, he was called up to the Japan senior squad for the first time in November 2021 for 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Oman. He made his senior international team debut for Japan on 14 November 2021.
