Both the England national team and Premier League club Leicester City use Maddison as an attacking midfielder. Before moving on to Norwich City in 2016, he began his career with Coventry City. He was Aberdeen’s loanee during the 2016–17 campaign in the Scottish Premiership.
Maddison was chosen to the EFL Team of the Season and the Championship PFA Team of the Year in his first season back at Norwich. In 2018, he signed with Leicester City of the Premier League.
Maddison made his senior squad debut in 2019, and from 2017 to 2019, he earned England under-21 caps.
Maddison joined the Coventry City youth team and was a member of the first team squad in 2013–14, however she did not play. In an August 2014 League Cup loss to Cardiff City, he made his debut as a substitute.
In a 3-1 home loss to Bristol City, Maddison made his league debut once more as a replacement. The next game, against Oldham Athletic, was his first league start.

On August 18, in a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, he scored his first goal in the Premier League. Following up on his strong debut for the team, he later scored back-to-back set-piece goals in the Premier League, against AFC Bournemouth and Huddersfield Town, respectively.

Maddison was a member of the England under-21 team in March 2016, however he was injured and was unable to participate. In a 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Ukraine, he made his debut after receiving his first call-up to the England under-21 team in November 2017.
Maddison made his debut for England on June 24 in a 3-3 draw with Croatia at the San Marino Stadium after being named to the 23-man squad for the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship on May 27.
Due to illness, Maddison withdrew from the senior team in October 2019. Brendan Rodgers, the team manager, justified his actions despite the fact that he was later photographed entering a casino.
In the 56th minute of England’s 7-0 victory over Montenegro in UEFA Euro 2020 qualification on November 14, Maddison made his international debut for his country, replacing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He was reinstated into the 26-man England team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after a three-year absence.
