Scott Hoying is the founder of the popular Capella pop group Pentatonix. He started the band with his best friend, Mitchell Grassi and other childhood friends such as Kristin Maldonado, Avi Kaplan (who was replaced by Matt Sallee in 2017) and Kevin Olusola. Almost all of Scott’s band songs have made it to the US Billboard charts. Their popularity and success have earned them many prestigious awards. Learn more about Scott Hoying, his personal and love life, and the Pentatonix.

Scott Hoying’s Bio

Scott Hoying was born Scott Richard Hoying to Rick and Connie Hoying in Arlington Town in Texas City, United States. Rick and Connie welcomed their son Scott on September 17, 1991. He has a sister, Lauren Hedrick, who is married to a son, Beckham, whom Scott is very fond of. The skinny lyricist attended Martin High School in Texas, where he grew up. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the University of Southern California.

His interest in music started at the very young age of 8. By then, he was an avid musical artist although he had no connection to music. He performed songs from time to time in high school and was very good at it. In college, he expanded his musical intelligence and prowess by joining the SoCal band VoCal and was able to draw an Acapella crowd with his baritone voice. He also gained the confidence to perform on stage through his performances with SoCal VoCals.

Halfway through college, Scott heard about auditioning for “The Sing-Off” contest and wanted to recreate his childhood dreams of becoming a top notch musician. He then put together a group of musicians made up of friends from his childhood: Mitchell Grassi, Kristin Maldonado, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. Together they formed what is now called the Pentatonix. The band performed in “The Sing-Off” competition and excelled brilliantly until the final stage. In the final phase, their sensational performance of Tiger’s Eye won them the show’s 3rd season in 2011.

Musical career with Pentatonix

The following year, Scott and his bandmates with manager Madison Gates recorded and released their debut EP, PTX Volume 1, in 2011. It climbed to #14 on the US Billboard 200 and reached #5 on the digital charts. This album also made history for topping the Holiday Album and Holiday Song charts since 1962.

He had his first tour in 2012, which was a huge success. All of his concerts have sold out in the 30 cities in America where he has performed with the group. Over the next few years, the Pentatonix released more albums, including Christmas albums and holiday albums. Moreover, all of his albums except a few were hugely successful.

Scott Hoying has a YouTube channel called Superfruit which he co-hosts with best friend and bandmate Mitch Grassi. The main contents of the channel are American comedies and musicals. It is used to showcase humor-focused vlogs as well as covers of acapella or medleys in the Pentatonix style.

The Pentatonix frontman also performed the national anthem and God Bless America during home diversions for the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks. He won prestigious awards such as the YouTube Music Awards in the Answer of the Years category in 2013. In 2014, he won the Streamy Awards in the Best Cover Song category for Daft Punk.

Alongside another YouTube Music Award, Scott Hoying joined the legends in receiving the prestigious Grammy Awards twice with his band members in 2015 and 2016 for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or Acapella. He also won the Shorty Awards in 2015.

Net value

Scott Hoying has carved a niche for himself in the Acapella music world through his recurring success in music. He was also able to acquire a lot of wealth from an early age and his worth is estimated at $8 million.

Family: father, mother

Scott’s father is Rick Hoying, an English instructor, and his mother is Connie Hoying, who worked in a nursing home. His parents’ marriage never stood the test of time, they divorced when he was much younger and had to live with his mother. However, his parents tried hard to raise him together and gave him a lot of support as he pursued a career in music, even though his father initially wanted him to be a doctor.

Is he gay, who is he dating? Boyfriend or girlfriend?

Scott Hoying likes to keep his personal life a secret and has not confirmed being in any relationship. However, he is openly gay. His best friend, Mitch Grassi, is also gay, and the duo have been dubbed the cute gay members of Pentatonix. Scott is also an LGBTQ+ activist. Scott and Mitch’s status and openness towards homosexuality has been reputed to help parents come to terms with the sexual orientation of their gay children, thus positively affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

Rumors betrayed Scott’s closeness to Mitch. Several people have accused them of being in a secret relationship largely because they do everything together and think of each other as their husbands.
