Goose Gossage Net Worth, Income, Salary, Earnings, Biography
He was born on July 5, 1951, in New York City, and was a former Major League Baseball bullpen pitcher who specialised in right-handed relief. Over the course of a 22-year baseball career (from 1972 to 1994), he threw for nine different clubs, with his greatest years coming with the New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres, respectively. When a buddy didn’t like his prior moniker “Goss,” he pointed out that he looked like a goose when he stretched his neck to read the signals provided by the catcher when he was throwing. The nickname “Goose” stuck after that. Despite the fact that Gossage is more often referred to as “Rich” in popular culture, the name “Rick” is used to refer to a baseball field named after him. While still in his teens, he became one of the first incarnations of the dominant contemporary closer, complete with wild facial hair and a gruff attitude to go along with his scorching fastball in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
He finished third in the American League in saves three times and second twice; at the conclusion of the 1987 season, he was second in major-league career saves, behind only Rollie Fingers, but his total of 310 was enough for fourth all-time. His 1,002 career games pitched in the majors placed him third in the majors at the time of his retirement, and he continues to rank third in both wins in relief (115) and innings pitched in relief (1,55623); his 1,502 strikeouts place him second only to Hoyt Wilhelm among pitchers who primarily pitched in relief. He also holds the record for the most blown saves in his career (112). From 1977 through 1983, he never had an earned run average higher than 2.62, with a low of 0.77 in 1981, and he placed third in the American League voting for both the MVP Award and the Cy Young Award in 1980, as the Yankees won the division championship. Gossage is well-known for his ability to make a difference in big games.
He has recorded the last out to win a division, league, or World Series championship seven times. Before Mariano Rivera overtook him in 2008, he held the record for the most All-Star appearances by a reliever. He was also chosen once as a starting pitcher in his career. In 2008, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He is currently employed in the broadcasting industry.
