Carl Fogarty’s Career
Forgart competed in World Superbikes in 1991 for Neil Tuxworth’s Honda UK team, placing seventh overall. In 1992, the team quit, and Fogarty nearly ended himself without a ride after a promised arrangement fell through.
Despite only having raced for a portion of the season, he eventually claimed his maiden WSBK victory at Donington Park and placed ninth overall.
He began his tenure as a factory Ducati racer in the 1993 campaign. He competed for the championship against Scott Russell, winning 11 races to the American’s five, but falling short because to Russell’s lack of consistency (Russell finished second twelve times compared to Fogarty’s two).
In order to capitalize on the triumphs of the previous season in 1994, two things came into play. After coming so close the season before, Fogarty was in shape and ready to win the championship; however, he would also be riding the new Ducati 916.
He battled back to defeat Russell and Aaron Slight to win the title after missing the Hockenheim races due to a broken wrist. Fogarty was able to secure the title with 5 of the final 24 races in 1995 thanks to winning 6 of the first 8 races, and he did the same in 1999 with 3 races left.
He competed for Tuxworth one more in 1996, this time with Honda factory backing. Fogarty finished fourth overall that season despite taking home four victories on the RC45, three more than teammate Slight and one more than Slight had been able to over the course of three seasons with the bike. He was 16 points behind Slight in second place and 38 points back of champion Troy Corser.
He switched back to Ducati in 1997, and he came in second overall to John Kocinski’s Honda. His closest championship was in the 1998 campaign; following a bad weekend at the Nürburgring, he was only sixth in the standings, but he fought back to beat Corser and Slight in the final round.
This was particularly noteworthy given that Davide Tardozzi’s squad, Ducati Performance, was competing in the WSBK for the first time.
After crashing and colliding with privateer Ducati rider Robert Ulm at Phillip Island, Fogarty was forced to retire from racing in 2000.
He was hurt numerous times, including a catastrophic shoulder injury that prevented him from recovering in time to race again. Troy Bayliss took his place in the factory Ducati team in his place.
It took him until 1995 to get his first triumph at Brands Hatch in any kind of racing. Between 1995 and 1999, he was significantly more successful at Assen, where he won all but one of the races.
