Alexis Kerry Ohanian was born on April 24, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. His parents are Anke Ohanian and Chris Ohanian. His mother hails from Germany. He attended Howard High School in Ellicott City, Maryland and later graduated from the University of Virginia in 2005 with degrees in commerce and history.

At the University of Virginia, Alexis Ohanian was inducted into The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS).
