Naruhito is the Emperor of Japan, whose net worth is $10 million. Naruhito rose to the Chrysanthemum Throne in May 2019, following his father, Akihito’s abdication. This marked the beginning of the Reiwa era, and Naruhito became Japan’s 126th monarch.

He was legally appointed crown prince in 1991, two years after his father became emperor. Hiro served as honorary president of the postponed Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2021.

How did Naruhito become the Emperor of Japan?

On December 1, 2017, it was announced that Emperor Akihito would abdicate on April 30, 2019, and Naruhito would ascend to the throne on May 1, 2019. After Naruhito became Emperor of Japan, his father was designated as Emperor Emeritus.

During a ceremony at the Imperial Palace, Emperor Naruhito remarked, “I swear that I will reflect deeply on the course followed by the Emperor Emeritus … and fulfill my responsibility as the symbol of the state and the unity of the people of Japan.”

According to Article 4 of Japan’s Constitution, the Emperor’s function is representative and ceremonial, with no government-related powers.

Prince Hiro was enthroned on October 22, 2019, and he will open the Tokyo Summer Olympics, which has been postponed because to the COVID-19 epidemic, on July 23, 2021. Emperor Naruhito and his wife, Empress Masako, attended Queen Elizabeth II’s imperial funeral in September 2022, followed by their first official visit to Indonesia in June 2023.

Meanwhile, Naruhito served as a patron for the Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics in 1998. He has long supported the World Organization of the Scout Movement, and he attended the 2006 Nippon Jamboree, which was organized by the Scout Association of Japan.

In 1994, he was named honorary vice president of the humanitarian organization the Japanese Red Cross Society. Naruhito visited the United Kingdom in 2001 when he met with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at Windsor Castle.

In 2012, he assumed his father’s duties for two weeks as Emperor Akihito recovered from heart surgery. Naruhito’s birthday was designated as “Mount Fuji Day” by Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures since he is said to be Japan’s tallest peak.
