He plays as a winger or a forward for the Scottish Premiership side Celtic and the Japan national team. In 2016, he joined Matsumoto Yamaga FC and made his debut on February 28. He scored his first goal on August 28 2016 in an Emperor’s Cup game against Tokuyama University.

Daizen on January 6, 2017, joined Mito HollyHock on a loan that run from February 2017 till January 2018. At the end of the loan, he returned to Matsumoto Yamaga FC and was loaned again to the Portuguese club, Maritimo in 2019 where he made his debut for the team on August 11, 2019, against Sporting CP as a substitute. On December 31, 2021, Daizen Maeda was announced to have signed for Scottish Premiership club Celtic on loan for the rest of the season, with an obligation to buy at the end of the loan.

On 17 January 2022, he made his debut and scored his first goal in the 4th minute, in a league fixture against Hibernian at Celtic Park. He signed a 4-year contract with Celtic at the end of the season when his move was made permanent

On 24 May 2019, Maeda was called by Japan’s head coach Hajime Moriyasu to feature in the Copa América played in Brazil becoming the 1st Matsumoto Yamaga player to ever feature for the senior’s side.

The 25-year-old made his debut on June 17, 2019, in the game against Chile. In Japan’s 2022 World Cup game against Germany, Maeda was substituted in the 57th minute. Japan advanced out of the group stage after beating Spain 2–1.
