Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch met in school and completed their secondary education at Jacob-Grimm-Schule in Kassel, Germany, in 2012. They were part of a jazz quintet called Flown Tones, with Rehbein on bass guitar and Dausch as a guitarist. The group disbanded, but the duo continued collaborating due to their strong connection. Combining electronic production with acoustic guitar and vocals, they created music that Rehbein wrote at home.

After only two live shows in 2013, they recorded their debut album in a simple homemade studio. Before releasing the record, they shared singles on SoundCloud and YouTube, gaining a following. The song “Stolen Dance,” written over three years, became a viral hit after its YouTube release in April 2013. The video garnered millions of views, making Milky Chance the “most blogged about act” for that month on HypeM.

The day after the video’s release, “Stolen Dance” became a single on their label, Lichtdicht Records, reaching number one in multiple countries, including Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and France.
