Career and Milky Chance

Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch met in school and completed their secondary education at Jacob-Grimm-Schule in Kassel, Germany, in 2012. They were part of a jazz quintet called Flown Tones, with Rehbein on bass guitar and Dausch as a guitarist. The group disbanded, but the duo continued collaborating due to their strong connection. Combining electronic production with acoustic guitar and vocals, they created music that Rehbein wrote at home.

After only two live shows in 2013, they recorded their debut album in a simple homemade studio. Before releasing the record, they shared singles on SoundCloud and YouTube, gaining a following. The song “Stolen Dance,” written over three years, became a viral hit after its YouTube release in April 2013. The video garnered millions of views, making Milky Chance the “most blogged about act” for that month on HypeM.

The day after the video’s release, “Stolen Dance” became a single on their label, Lichtdicht Records, reaching number one in multiple countries, including Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and France. It also topped charts in Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary, and reached number one on the Billboard Alternative chart. Their first major show was at the Dockville festival in Hamburg, attended by about 5,000 people.

Wanting to expand their reach, Milky Chance performed at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, catching the attention of a representative from Ignition. After a meeting, they secured a distribution deal and embarked on a 100+ show tour across Europe with just a guitar, decks, and an MPC.

Awards and Achievements

Clemens rose to prominence through Milky Chance, and the band’s achievements collectively define his success. In 2015, the group earned an Echo Award for Most Successful National Act Abroad, and in 2018, they secured another Echo Award for Best National Rock/Pop Group.

Milky Chance also garnered nominations for the Echo Music Prize in Germany, being recognized in categories such as Best Newcomer and Best Group. These acknowledgments highlight the band’s impact and acclaim within the music industry.

Style

Milky Chance blends folk, reggae, and jazz elements in their music. Described by USA Today as a “singer-songwriter with electronic beats,” according to Noisey, they expertly combine house and electronic beats with reggae and R&B influences, all while maintaining folk-like lyrics. The band draws inspiration from diverse artists like Bob Marley, Ray Charles, and John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In the studio, they keep it simple, initially recording their debut releases using only a MacBook Pro, a guitar, a microphone, and a Logic Pro. Clemens Rehbein uses various guitars, including the Framus Mayfield Custom Electric.
