Montes was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico to Gildarda Montes and César Montes Sr. He shares the same parents with his brother, Alán Montes.
Montes is a ball-playing defender who, despite his youth, has displayed maturity. He can pick out long passes, can execute a well-timed and accurate slide tackle, has demonstrated his ability to contribute goals from set-pieces, and is good in the air and able to deal with high balls into the box.

Miguel Alemán’s performance for Pob. in a youth league playoff game against Monterrey attracted the attention of the opposition squad.
He was eventually added to the Monterrey youth team, and on August 2, 2015, during the opening of the Estadio BBVA Bancomer, Montes played his first game for Monterrey against the Portuguese team Benfica.
In the 48th minute of the second half, Montes, who had been brought on as a substitute, scored the stadium’s first-ever goal. Benfica was trounced 3-0 by Monterrey.
On July 29, 2015, Montes made his official debut for Monterrey against Correcaminos UAT in a Copa MX Apertura group stage match, in which Monterrey won 3-1. He was included in the Best XI at the conclusion of the 2016 Clausura.
He would defeat América in the 2019 Apertura finals at the end of December. With their Copa MX triumph in 2019–20, Monterrey completed t he continental treble.
Clásico Montes has scored three goals against Tigres UANL in Regiomontano games, which have proven to be important for Montes.
On September 19, 2015, against Tigres UANL, he would make his league debut. Rogelio Funes Mori received a 40-meter long ball assist from him to score the lone goal for Monterrey in a 3-1 loss.
He scored the lone goal for Monterrey in the second leg of the Clausura 2016 championship quarterfinal against Tigres UANL on May 14, 2016. Monterrey lost 2-1, but the final result was 4-3 in their favor, advancing them to the semifinal versus América.
He would tie the Tigres UANL match on October 29, 2016, 1-1. In a 1-0 victory over Tigres UANL on April 21, 2017, Montes scored the only goal.
On December 27, 2022, Montes relocated to Spain and signed a 2028 contract with La Liga team RCD Espanyol.
The senior national team selected Montes to compete in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He would make his debut on July 13, 2017, against Jamaica in a group stage encounter, replacing Rodolfo Pizarro at halftime, with the score being 0-0.
Montes was selected by head coach Gerardo Martino on June 6 to compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
As Mexico went on to win the competition, he made an appearance as a replacement in the group stage match against Cuba and as a starter in the final group stage match against Martinique.
Montes was selected for Mexico’s preliminary 31-man team in October 2022, and in November he was finally added to the final 26-man roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
