Cash relocated to Memphis, Tennessee after leaving the Air Force in 1954. He started off selling appliances and studying to be a radio announcer, but he quickly discovered his true passion: music. He eventually auditioned for Sam Phillips at Sun Records, but was turned down because his Gospel music was out of style.
